Floral Coins Blocks

Floral Coins Blocks

There is something about one patch quilts which I believe is endearing to most quilters.  It’s quite mathematically satisfying to use one replicated shape to make a beautiful quilt or quilted object.

Some obvious examples of one patch blocks other than a square, are triangles, diamonds, an isosceles trapezoid (what we would call a tumbler block),  or a rectangle/brick shape or even the Dresden plate. These are shapes which can be machine pieced.

Some other examples of one patch blocks are the hexagon,, coffin shape or apple core.  These  patches require hand piecing.

I’ve always wanted to make a coin quilt or sometimes called a Chinese Coin quilt, but I didn’t really have the right inspiration until I saw an antique Coin quilt made with florals. They may have been barkcloth but I’m not sure.

A Coin Quilt is a quilt which traditionally  has lots of long thin blocks placed one ontop of another, just like coins, then they are sewn into strips.

I’m inspired to make a beautiful Coin quilt in lots of florals.

These are my Floral Coin rectangles, just finished cutting.  I used some scraps and left over charm  squares.  I think they look really beautiful!

Of course, you may be wondering why I am making blocks for a Coin Quilt?  Why not just keep sewing???  Well, I figured it will help to keep the rows nice and straight.

This is going to be a super fast and easy small quilt.

This is how I did it.

Requirements for the Floral Coin Blocks

100 of 4 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ assorted floral rectangles (coins) for the blocks.

102 extra of the floral rectangles 4 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ to complete the quilt.

Method

All seams based on 1/4″.

Sew two of the 4 1/2″ x 2  1/2″ floral coins on the long sides, right sides together.

Sew 2 sets together to make a block 4 1/2″ x 8 1/2″.  I’m trying to be very random about how I put these together, in terms of colour.

Repeat for the other 96 coins to make 25 blocks in total.

Today I’m sewing on this Singer 201k treadle.

These blocks are so pretty and come together really quickly!  It’s Sunday afternoon and the slow cooker is on with my Braised Steak and Onions so I had time to sew.
