Charm Printz Quilt & Tutorial

Charm Printz Quilt & Tutorial

Hello Dear Friends and Readers,

Today I would love to share with you this easy, one block starter quilt.  Made from 5″ Charm Squares.

Anyone could make this quilt.  It is made from basic four patches which are a fabulous starter block for any quilt.

Four Patch Favourite

Also you can use your scraps or some precut charm squares,

.

If you have the slightest inclination to sew a quilt, this could be for you.  If you are an inexperienced quilter it’s very achievable and even experienced quilters sometimes are wanting a quick Holiday project.  If there is a special man in your life you would like to make a quilt for, try this project.  Alternatively, change the colour ways to make a quilt for a lady or a child.  This is a large lap sized quilt.  It contains 144 Charm Squares in a 12 x 12 layout, with a 2 1/2″ strip border

I cut my own 5″squares from a mixture of blues, golds and burgundy prints.   You can purchase pre-cut Charm Squares but if you already have a fabric stash I would encourage you to look at that first and see what you have.  (See previous post “About buying the  fabric”).  Don’t worry about  matching things.  It will look good when it all comes together.

Let’s get started.

Choose from a minimum of 14 different prints.  Of course there can be many more depending on what you have available.  If they were all different that would be a true charm quilt.

Finished quilt size approximately 58″ square
Finished block size 9 1/2″
Seam allowance 1/4″

Ingredients for the Charm Printz Quilt

24 Burgandy colour print 5″ squares
60 assorted Blue prints of 5″ squares
60 assorted Gold prints of 5″ squares
7 x 2 1/2″ strips  WOF (width of fabric) for the border in gold print
7 x 2 1/2″  WOF burgundy strips for the binding
4 metres/yards blue print fabric for the backing
piece of batting  62″ x 62″
Method
Assemble all ingredients.    There are many  ways to assemble this quilt, and while it may seem logical to make lines of 12 and sew them together,  sewing long lines in quilting where you are trying to match seams can be a little tricky.
My my suggestion is to sew groups of four Charm Squares together.   Ensure each set of four contains different prints.  Chain piece the squares together initially in sets of two.  Then cut them apart and sew into sets of four squares.  Ensure that the centre seams are matched and nested in each unit of four squares.
Once all the four patches are assembled, repeat using the four patch blocks.  Sew together in the same way to make 16 patch blocks making sure to match and nest all seams.  Each square should be against a different square.
Now ow you should have nine 16 patch blocks.  Lay them out in a nine patch configuration.  Make sure no matching squares are opposing.  Sew them together.
Take the 7 gold print 2 1/2″ strips and join them together.  Be sure to remove the selvages.  make a border around the quilt using the long 2 1/2″ strip.
That’s it!  now your quilt top is ready for backing and binding.
This quilt lends itself to any kind of edge to edge quilting or just a plain stitch in the ditch.  I quilted mine with a looping stitch on a domestic sewing machine.
