Antique Nine Patch with Sashiko Quilt

Antique Nine Patch with Sashiko Quilt

Antique Nine Patch Blocks are lovely, I think.  A very lovely design which will stand the test of time.

I decided to make a baby quilt for a new baby girl.  I have to say that I love the simplicity of antique nine patch quilts and that was my major inspiration to make this style of quilt.  Of course I wanted it to be scrappy with lots of block variation.

Nine Patch set on point look terrific because the quilt appears so balanced. So that’s what I decided to do. Every Nine Patch block is a unique combination of fabrics, with two fabrics in each block.

Incidentally, if you would like to make a quilt like this , the squares are 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ making each block 6 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ square.  I made 24 blocks, placed a a four by six configuration set on point.

It’s great for using up some scraps.  They can easily be cut from leftovers in your stash. I used lots of  florals, however, I think it would look great in plaids too!  A light pink puppy novelty print is used for the background squares.  I used all the same fabrics from the nine patches to make a complementary scrappy border, these are also made from 2 1/2″ x 2 1/2″ squares.

For something different, I machine quilted it in  Sashiko style around the blocks which gives it the ruffled look between each block to make it just a little bit different!  I don’t like baby quilts too heavily quilted as they become stiffer.   This quilt is lovely and soft and very drapable.  I called this quilt “Puppies in the Garden”, because the pale pink background fabric has puppies in it.  This quilt is now residing somewhere in Switzerland.
