Dish Quilt and Tutorial

Dish Quilt. Oh I know, how dull, doing dishes, but anything that makes it a bit more fun has to be good…..

Hello Everyone and welcome to todays post.    Whether or not you have a dishwasher, there are always those things which don’t go in the dishwasher or require hand washing.  Big pots, baking dishes and delicate plates or glasses, Sentimental pieces.  It may be that you might just prefer hand washing dishes, which is more gentle and less damaging to the surfaces.

Big items take up a whole dish strainer in one go.  That’s why making and having a dish quilt is great.  Great for absorbing moisture, as a sound dampener and a surface protector and increase the surface area of where you can put your washed dishes.

Before I launch into it I would also like to mention, when you get those old towels, in your linen press, that seem to be too good to throw out, but definitely unsightly for a visitor……Give them a new life.  Cut off all the hard selvages and put them into your dish quilt.  This is a great way to repurpose.  It will make it extra absorbent.

Now don’t fret, if you don’t have old towels that need to be used up, just use batting.  If your batting is thin, use 2 layers.

Today I will make it out of Charm squares, but this is also a great way to use up some of those lonely quilt blocks that haven’t made it into a quilt.  Also its a self binding project which will speed it up.

Requirements for the Dish Quilt

12 x 5″ Charm Squares of quilting cottons
1 x fat quarter of fabric for the backing

1 piece of towel or 2 batting approx 15″ x 19″

Method

Lay out the 12 x 5″ Charm Squares, making sure no 2 the same are touching each other until they look good to you.  Sew them together in a 3 x 4  layout using a 1/4″ seam allowance and ensuring all seams are nested.  Press.

Lay out your backing piece right side down, add the towel piece or batting and the the sewn squares, right side up..  Make sure that everything is centred.  Quilt as desired.

Trim the batting / towelling to match the top,  There will be the remnant backing remaining.  Trim the remnant backing to about 1 1/4 inches from the quilted piece,  Double fold the edges to the front, mitre the corners, pin and top stitch.  Use a 90 or 100 needle to do the top stitching as the fabric is quite thick.
