Growing Grandmother’s Garden

Hello Dear Friends and Readers,

I have been working on this handstitching project for some years now…..ie quite some years! 😂

Anyhoo, I just thought I would share the update with you and hopefully, if you have a nice handstitching project, you might feel inspired to get it out too.  I have been taking this project with me when I fly, so it is not that often.  here is the previous post which contains all the links to how I did it.

Grandmother’s Flower Garden Quilt in Progress

You can see my project is looking pretty wrinkled.  That is because I had it packed in a box for a while and all the papers have became crinkled.

Last night my interest was rekindled when we watched an old movie, “Trading Places”.  In the movie, Jamie Lee Curtis has the most gorgeous Grandmother’s Garden Quilt on her bed!  I have to say at this point that I very much appreciate the fact that there are hexagon quilts out there which are way more intricate and hugely accomplished…..but personally I do have a love for the more simple ones, especially the ones from the 1930’s depression era.  When I saw that one in the movie it inspired me to continue to work on mine and what is more, I would like to do another.

I managed to do some gardening this week, I think that combination of gardening, and seeing the Grandmother’s Flower Garden quilt is a good reminder …..  Who doesn’t love flowers after all?

Just talking out loud, I consider one of the issues with hexagon quilts, is in how to finish them.  It can become slightly perplexing on how to finish the edges.  The sides will be different and the placements so very variable.  After last night, I think I am overthinking it.  I think I will just finish it to the edges with partial blocks.

My plan is to keep going until I run out of background fabric.  So maybe I am halfway there!

Halfway is not too bad!  I will keep going and keep you guys posted!

All the best for your stitching,
