Happy Day Microwave Bowl Holder Pattern

Happy Day Microwave Bowl Holder Pattern

Dear Friends and Readers,

You will never believe how easy this Microwave Bowl Holder is to make.  What’s more it folds flat for easy storage when not in use.   That means it only collapses when you want it to!  I’ve designed this Holder for super fast construction too, so you can whip them up in no time for your home or for fast and fabulous gifts!

Once you have used microwave bowl holders, you feel like you can’t go without them.  Use up some left over scraps of fabric and batting.  For best results use 100% wool batting (least flammable) or 100% cotton without a scrim.   Make sure you use a 100% cotton or linen fabric.  Of course I must point out that any fibre used in the microwave has a possibility of burning.   Oh yes, I’ve experienced microwave fires.  😬 When my children were younger and making microwave popcorn!  Just a few seconds too long and yes, they burst into flames!  But that is always a danger with microwaves if the food is too dry or there is metal in the microwave oven. Personally, I dont put mine into the microwave built rather add my bowl after the food has been heated.    Anyhow Im sure you are all very sensible with yours. 😀

This Microwave Bowl Pattern is easy to make in whatever size suits your bowls.   Small,  medium or large.  Actually I Ofen use mine to store fresh fruits or vegetables like small tomatoes or chillies rather than having them in plastic.

Finished approximate diameters of 5″, 6.5″ and 7.5″.

Choose from 2 complementary fabrics , one for the inside and one for the outside.

Lets get started.

Ingredients for one Microwave Bowl Holder

2  of 10″ x 10″ squares of fabric (small)

or, 2 of 12″ x 12″ squares ( medium)

or 2 of 14″ x 14″ squares (large)

One piece of batting 10″ x 10″, or 12″ x 12″ or 14″ x14″ to match the Bowl size you are making.

Method for Construction

Take one batting square. Make sure it’s smooth. Add a fabric square, place exactly on top, right side facing up. Take the second fabric square, lay on top, right side facing down.

Sew a quarter inch seam around the perimeter, leaving approximately a 3″ opening, on one side for turning.  Clip the corners.  Turn the piece to the right side through the opening. Use a chop stick to push out the corners.

Carefully fold in 1/4″ seam allowance of the opening and pin in place. Press.   Topstitch all around the outside as close as possible to the edge.

Quilt as desired.  You can do this as simply as you like, for example, just Stitch a cross corner to corner to make an “X” or use as an opportunity to practice some free motion quilting.

Measure the exact halfway point on two opposing sides. Fold each side toward the mark, outside fabric showing.  The two sides should be abutting.  Pin the sides in place.

Sew a seam approximately 3/8″ from the edge.  Repeat for the other side.

Turn the piece over, so that the unseamed smooth side is facing you. Now fold in half lengthwise once.  Carefully line up the short  side edges, so that they meet exactly.  Sew a seam following the same side seam as before, begin and end 3/8″ from the edge.  Stitch twice or backstitch to reinforce.

Open your Bowl Holder.  Ready to use.  Fold flat to store.

I really like to use these to serve bowls of hot food.  The big one fits my rice bowl very well, so I can bring it to the table.  The table is protected from the heat and the rice stays warm too.
