Stars and Crosses Band Quilt Pattern

Stars and Crosses Band Quilt Pattern.

I really like the look of Band quilts or sometimes called row quilts. They do look particularly nice for baby quilts. This pretty quilt can be made with scrap 2″ squares. Read more of this quilt story here.

All fabrics had been washed before commencement.  All seam allowances are based on one-quarter inch.  Finished quilt size approximately 32″ x 50 1/2″.  Please press as you go.

Requirements for the Stars and Crosses Band Quilt

208 x 2″ scrap fabric squares medium to dark
32 x 2″ scrappy  1/2 square triangle units
24″ of pink on pink fabric.
I metre of white homespun background fabric

Cutting

From the white homespun cut,
13 x 2″ WOF (Width of Fabric) strips, then sub-cut
21 X 6 1/2″ strips
6 x 14″ strips
80 X 2″ squares
From the pink on pink fabric, cut,
2 X 2″ WOF strips
2 x 3 1/2″ WOF strips
4 X 2″ squares
4 X 2 1/2″ WOF strips for the binding

Construction

Use 3 x 2″ scrap squares and 1 x 2″ white square and sew together to make a four patch unit.  Make 64 of these units ensuring good fabric variation.  Then use four of these four patch units and sew together to make a bigger four patch unit.

Make sure that each white square is at the outside corners. This will make the cross units. Make 16.

To make the stars, sew 4 x 2″ squares together x 4 to make the star centres. Make 32 x 1/2 square triangle units, one half coloured scrap and the other half is white homespun. Use your favourite method or try my half square Triangles Fast and Multiple for 2″ units.

Half Square Triangle Units – Fast and Multiple

Sew the half square triangle units together in sets of two as pictured.

Add one of these units to two opposite sides of the scrappy four patches.

Then sew a white square to the opposite ends of the remainder units.

Sew one of these units to the remainder two sides of these blocks to reveal 4 x star units.

Using 5 of the 2″ X 6 1/2″ white strips to sew the star blocks together beginning with a white strip, then a star block, repeat and finish with a white strip.  This makes the centre Star Band.   Sew a 2″ X WOF strip to the long sides of the star blocks.  Then sew a 2″ pink on pink strip to each longitudinal side of the star blocks unit. Trim the ends of the Star Band block.

Using 4 X 6 1/2″ white strips, one 1 X 2″ pink square and four of the 6 1/2″ cross blocks, to make a nine patch unit with the cross blocks on the corners and the white strips between each of those and the pink square in the centre.  Repeat to make 4 of these.

Sew a 14″ X 2″ white strip to two opposite sides of one of these units, then add a second 4 cross unit to a white strip side, followed by another 14″ X 2″ white strip on the end of the row.  Sew a 2″ WOF to each long side of this band then trim ends to square. Repeat to make a second identical band.

Take the star band you previously constructed.  This will be the centre of the quilt.  Now carefully match and pin the long side of the cross bands to each long side of the star band.  Sew together.  Now sew the 3 1/2″ WOF pink on pink strips to each end of the quilt  trim to square.

Incidentally, I made this quilt for a beautiful young mother and her baby girl. If you wished to make this quilt for a boy, just substitute the pink on pink fabric for a blue on blue.
