Four in Nine Patch Block Tutorial

Four in Nine Patch Block Tutorial

This block is a companion to the Friendship Star Block.  Mind you, they are quite nice on their own too!

Find the link to the block here.

Friendship Stars Block Tutorial Fast & Fresh

It is  nice to find blocks which can complement each other in size and style.  Since the Friendship block is quite simple, I think this block will “chain” the stars together and create interest and movement.

This is made up of four small four patch blocks, which are then sewn into the corners of a nine patch, to create direction.

I’m using the same fabrics as the Friendship Stars blocks, that is, plaids, checks, ginghams and shirtings, with a plain homespun as the background.

All fabrics have been washed before commencement.

All seams based on 1/4″.

Block size approximately 9 1/2″ x 9 1/2″.

Requirements for one Four in Nine Patch Block

8 of 2″ x 2″ coloured squares
8 of 2″ x 2″ background squares in cream/white
1 of 3 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ coloured square
4 of 3 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ background squares in cream/white
Method
Take two of the 2″ x 2″  coloured squares and two of the 2″ x 2″ background squares.  Sew into a four patch, alternating the fabrics.  Repeat to make four blocks.
Lay out the nine patch, with the 3 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ coloured square in the centre.     Put the four patches in the corners, taking care that the coloured squares are pointing to the corners.  Put the four neutral background 3 1/2″ squares in between.
Sew into a nine patch.
Today, I am sewing on a Singer 201K. If you happen to find one of these machines – dont let it pass you by… they are wonderful sewing machines.  We will never see this quality repeated in this era of disposable everything!
Get one if you can….
And while I’m sewing, I had this in the oven.
Here is how the blocks are looking.

Maybe you are wondering how I used these blocks?  I combined them with The Friendship Star Blocks.  Here is the quilt top I made from them with all the pattern instructions included.  Click on the link below.
