New Scrappy Double Four In Nine Patch Jacobs Ladder Quilt Block Variation – Part 2

Hello Dear Friends and Readers. Welcome!

Today I would like to share with you the progress on the New Double Four In Nine Patch Jacobs Ladder Quilt Blocks and how I have decided to put them together. You may recall the original post of how to make the block.

Do you have some scraps you would like to use up? This is a great scrap challenge as it uses different sized units and some basic homespun as the anchoring fabric. I have made these super scrappy. It has a lot of possibilities and would work very well in more ordered colours or even as a two coloured quilt if you felt so inclined. For example red and white or blue and white would be amazing and also have a more antique look. Get your scraps out and cut then up. If you need some inspiration, this may help.

Cut Up Your Quilting Off-cuts

In keeping with a four patch theme and to give the quilt symmetry, I am putting four of the blocks together, so that the diagonals of the Jacobs Ladder each rotate to form a diamond, or square in a square pattern. As you can see, as the double four patches come together in the centre a further pattern of a circle emerges from the smaller four patches and the lager squares of the four patches are crossing through on the diagionals.

Finished size of this unit is 25” x 25”

One set like this with a border could easily be a crib quilt or a nice table topper.

Method

Set out the four blocks in a big four patch, ensuring that the taupe diagonal of each block rotates so that they all meet to form a square in a square, as pictured above.

Some piecing notes…..I started piecing these a long time ago and I have to say that I think my piecing has improved a lot since then. Some of it is far from perfect, but nevertheless its all a learning curve after all, don’t you think?

Squaring Up of Quilt Blocks

So learning from my mistakes, I would suggest, being careful with piecing and pressing. It will matter when putting the blocks together as there is more “force” from the smaller pieced blocks than the diagonal blocks. As the seam junctions will be meeting, rather than opposing, it will not be possible to nest the seams, at some of the joins as they will be laying in the same direction. They may require a bit of coaxing and pinning so they they sit nicely.

Sew the four blocks together like a four patch.
