What’s Cooking?…

Braised Steak and Onions Slow Cooker

An old fashioned favorite.  What can I say.  There is such an advantage at times, to be able to prepare a meal ahead of time. It means that most of the prep work and cleaning up has been accomplished too.  My Dad always loved this dish, providing that the meat was lean. It has become a bit of a Sunday favorite for me because then it means I can relax and do other things.  It’s always well received. Not to mention the wonderful and appetising smell which is wafting in the background.

Serve it with some quality Basmati rice ( preferably aged if you can get you hands on some) and greens in season.

This is how I do it.

Ingredients

2 Tablespoons olive oil
4 medium to large Brown onions
1kg quality braising steak
3 Tablespoons plain Flour
Freshly ground black pepper
1 teaspoon salt
1 Tablespoons Brown Sugar
2 Tablespoons White Vinegar
2 Tablespoons Worcestershire Sauce

2 Tablespoons light Soy Sauce

Method

Turn on the slow cooker to the high position and allow to heat up.

Peel and slice the onions. Put them into the cooker with the olive oil. Mix well to coat the onions. Put the lid on.

Put the flour on a plate and season with the salt and pepper. Mix through.  Cut the steak into 1 1/2″ cubes.  Coat the steak pieces with the flour mix.

Add the flour coated steak to the slow cooker. Mix well to distribute with the onions.   Now add the sugar, vinegar, worcestershire sauce and soy sauce.  Mix to combine.  Put the lid on.  Cook for approximately 4 hours on high or 8 hours on low.

Meat should be tender.

Serve with the basmati rice and greens.
