Tattered Heart Quiltlet
Hello Dear Friends and Readers and warm welcome to today’s post. As Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching, I thought we needed a quick heart project to mark the day, or actually to use any time that you like!
Some years back, I posted a quick kettle quiltlet, which has been quite popular, I have made several myself. I find them to be so handy around the kitchen or really anywhere that needs a bit of fabric underneath to rest on like the kettle or as a hot pad or even underneath plant pots or as a place mat or even in the bathroom. They are so quick and easy, it’s a very satisfying little project which you can have done in a short period of time. Kettle Quiltlet and Tutorial
With all those things in mind, I then designed a Tattered Heart Quiltlet. I made one years ago and it has endured many washings and even some hard use. Regardless, it still washes up even more prettily each time.
Don’t you just love a project, which uses up all those small pieces of batting, flannel or flannellette? I know I do. This project is Fun. It is made with 5 inch squares so it is simple and easy to do. Because it is a rag project, it comes together very quickly. Find your favourite 5 inch squares and let’s get to it.
A fun quick project to add a little sweet heart into your day.💖
I am sewing on a Singer 201k treadle today. Singer 201K Treadle C1947. This is one of my favourite machines to sew with. I have attached a Singer low shank Walking Foot today the machine.
TIP
A walking foot is advantageous but not essential.
Requirements For one Tattered Heart Quiltlet
Seven of 5“ x 5“ scrap cotton squares for the front
Seven of 5“ x 5“ cotton squares for the back ( these can be matching)
Seven of 5“ x 5“ squares of batting or leftover flannel or flanellette
Finished size approximately 12 inches.
Seam allowance half an inch.
Making the Tattered Heart Quiltlet
Put down a backing square face down. Cover it with a square of batting, flannel or flannellette. Then put one of the front squares on top carefully lining them all up.
Repeat with all the others in the same manner so that there will be seven stacks. Pin as desired.
Take the seven sets to the sewing machine. Sew along both diagonals of each set.
Choose one set to be the sides and cut it once carefully along the diagonal.
Lay out the squares and the side triangles to make a heart shape, as shown below.
This heart will now be sewn together much like a nine patch. (except it is eight pieces)
Using a half inch steam allowance, sew the blocks together as shown below.
Sew a seam half an inch away from the edge around the perimeter of the heart. Sew a second seam a small distance away as a reinforcement.
Clip all the seams at one quarter inch gaps. Use the back of a blunt butter knife to run along the seams to fluff them up. Clip As You Go Technique
Shake out, preferably outside to remove any other loose lint. it is a good idea not to be wearing black! 😂
That is it! Enjoy your Tattered Heart Quiltlet and I hope you have an enjoyable Valentine’s Day,
