Mountains Of Scraps

Hello Dear Friends and Readers, I have something beautiful to share with you today.   I’m feeling ever so grateful and delighted  because……… guess what?  Someone made a quilt for me!! Isn’t that marvelous!! That beautiful someone is my Step Mother who is a very accomplished needle woman  she has indeed won quite a number of prizes for her work which covers many genres besides patchwork, including crochet, cross stitch and embroidery.  Marion also supports the Orange Tree Quilters, a charitable organisation who make quilts for children, neonates and stillborn babies.  Her job is to hand stitch all of their quilt bindings.  That is hundreds of metres / yards of binding.

Orange Tree Quilters

I will not be sharing a pattern as it is not my design, however I would love to share the inspiration and beauty of this quilt with you all.

The quilt is made using the pattern of Delectable. Mountains. It is a wonderful old  pattern and all those hundreds of half square triangles are just beautiful!

Here is an article which sheds a bit more light on the pattern and its history in case you are interested.

The Delectable Mountains block itself is extremely adaptable and can be set in many unique ways for a different look.  It’s beautiful as a single colour or as a scrappy quilt.  I think Marion’s colour choices are perfect for me.

Many of her fabrics look reminiscent of civil war reproductions and colours.   The following photo is a close up of one of the blocks.  It’s super scrappy with so much variation in each block.  The red/ burgundy of the borders and the background of the toile are the elements which hold the quilt together.

You will also notice that she designed and hand stitched a wonderful Dogs Tooth Border all around the perimeter of the quilt, which really adds to its overall finish and complements the red/burgandy toile border.
