To sew up the base of the bag, bring two adjacent sides together.  Sew right sides together.  Repeat for the two opposite adjacent sides.

Now sew the remaining opening together.  Be sure to match the centre point and nest the seams.  Now you should have a flat square base.

Repeat these steps for the bag lining.

With the bag right side out, insert the lining with wrong sides together.  Pin.   Stay stitch the two layers together on the upper edge of the bag.

Attach the handles of the front and back of the bag.  Make sure that the handles, are on the  same side as the pocket in the lining.  This ensure that the pocket will be flat when carrying the bag.

For the drawstring cover of the bag, cut 2 x 24″ pieces from the width of fabric  Check measure the top of the bag.  It should be 25″  for each side or 50″ altogether for the perimeter.  Sub cut from the 2 x 24″ pieces 2 x 24″ x 27″ units.

Put the two pieces right sides together.  Make sure that the fabric is the same way up for both sides.  Sew a 1″ seam down each side of the 24″ sides, leaving a 2″ opening at the centre of each seam.  Turn under the raw edge a 1/2″ seam.  Pin well.  Sew down the make the seams lie flat.  Repeat for each side.  The scissors in the picture below are pointing to one of the openings.

Fold the whole piece of fabric in half wrong sides together.  It’s like a tube.  Now the openings should be at the top.  Align the raw edges together and press.   Sew a seam 1″ from the folded edge of the fabric tube.

Finally, to make the drawstrings, join the short ends of the 3 x 2″ width of fabric strips.  Fold in 1/2″ on each longitudinal side, then fold the whole in half longitudinally.  Press.  Sew down the entire length to close the opening.  Sew down the opposite side.   Cut in half to make two strings.

Working from one opening in the top of the drawstring cover opening, use a safety-pin to thread it all the way round coming out at the same opening. Tie a knot at each end of the string.  Then knot the two ends together.
