Quilted Kitchen Cleaning Cloths

Quilted Kitchen Cleaning Cloths

Hello Dear Friends and Readers,

One might tend to think that a kitchen cleaning cloth is a simple matter……?

Many years ago I made some of these kitchen cloths. At the time I did it because I had run out of commercial cloths, so I tried to come up with something myself.  Necessity really is the mother of all invention.  Happily, I can report that they have been very good.  For me, apart from the fact that they look nice and have washed well, they have never been smelly!   I put that down to the fact that they are made from natural cotton fiber rather than microfiber.

It turns out, that although microfiber can attract and trap particulate matter, I believe it can retain the microbes which accounts for the foul smelling which seems to return quickly even after washing.  Apparently microfiber may not be that great for the environment afterall, depending how you look at it…..and has become part of the microplastics which are now embodied in the food chain.

I didn’t realise they require special cleaning.

Anyhow, with all this in mind, I decided to show you how I made these kitchen cleaning cloths. I continue to enjoy them.  Other solutions are crocheting cotton cloths, which are also lovely to use.    Here is one. This lady likes cotton too!

You can use worn teatowels if you really are in the mood to recycle.  If you like to, they can also be made scrappy, like the one you will see in the photos.

Requirements for making 2 Kitchen Cloths

2 pieces of Quilting cotton each measuring 12″ x 14 1/2″.

2 pieces of course cotton or linen fabric,  each measuring 12″ x  14 1/2″.  I used a cotton teatowel cut in half with hems removed.

Instructions for making Quilted Kitchen Cleaning Cloths

Put one quilting cotton piece and one tea towel piece right sides together. Stitch a 1/4″ seam around the edge leaving an opening for turning. Clip the corners.

Turn  to the right side. Gently push out the corners.  Pin the opening closed.  Press.  Top stitch all the way around approximately 1/8th” from the edge.

Now sew a line from each diagonally opposing corner,  so that it makes an X.  Feel free to do more if you prefer.

That is it.  Trim any loose threads. Repeat to make the second cloth.  Your cloths are ready to use.

Great for a quick gift too!
